Comprehensive liver care at Harborview
The Liver Clinic at Harborview Medical Center evaluates and treats patients with chronic hepatitis B and C infections and other chronic liver diseases. These include non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, hemochromatosis, primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis.
We offer physical examinations, lab testing, imaging studies (including CT and MRI scanning), transient elastography (FibroScan), liver biopsy and disease-specific treatments, among other services.
We also provide comprehensive care for all patients with liver disease, including cirrhosis (extensive liver scarring) that may arise from chronic liver disease. This includes monitoring and treatment for symptoms of cirrhosis as well as preventive care such as screening for varices (large veins in the esophagus that can bleed) or liver cancer. Some patients with chronic liver disease may require liver transplantation. Our physician team can help patients make that determination along with appropriate referrals.
UW Medicine Specialty Pharmacy services are provided for patients with hepatitis C and hepatitis B to work with the insurance to make sure they cover the drug costs, get the medication authorized in a timely manner, and to connect the patient with resources to help make treatment affordable.
Clinical pharmacy services include new drug treatment review for patients with hepatitis C and B to ensure that there are no drug-drug interactions. Clinical pharmacists also ensure that the treatment prescription gets to the appropriate pharmacy and that the patient has all the necessary vaccinations before starting treatment. Clinical pharmacists also offer a medication teaching visit when the patient is newly starting treatment, and pharmacists monitor the patient throughout the treatment course. In these visits, our pharmacists will review the patient’s disease state, monitor the patient’s hepatitis C or B treatment, follow up on the results of any labs, and will also answer any questions that the patient may have.
