Rebecca Maine, MD MPH is a general surgeon who specializes in trauma surgery and surgical intensive care. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington school of medicine. She serves as a core faculty member at the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center and for the UW Program for Rural and Global Surgery (PROGRESS). She is also an associate program director for the General Surgery Residency Program, and a leader of the Department’s Wellness Committee. After medical school and residency at the University of California San Francisco, she completed her training at the UW surgical critical care fellowship at Harborview in 2017. She is board certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Her clinical practice includes trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, surgical critical care, and elective general surgery.

Dr. Maine has several research interests related to improving the equity in the delivery and outcomes of surgical care. Her ongoing research focuses on novel methods to improve trauma systems, both in the US and in low- and middle-income countries. She currently has projects in Washington State, Rwanda and South Africa. In addition, she is committed to improving the experience of patients at Harborview and is working to move Harborview to ensure that all members of the hospital staff care for patients in a trauma informed manner. She works with the surgical departmental quality improvement leaders to optimize how significant events are identified and addressed in a timely manner, with the goal of improving the experience and outcomes of all UW surgical patients. She is also leading an initiative to teach cognitive skills that improve resilience for both trainees and other members of the Surgery Department.
