About Michael S. Mulligan
Michael Mulligan, M.D., is board-certified in both thoracic surgery and general surgery, Director of the UW's Lung Transplant, Advanced Lung Disease Surgery, and Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Programs, the UW Medicine Distinguished Endowed Professor of Lung Transplant and Surgery, and a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UW Medicine School of Medicine.
Dr. Mulligan is an international leader in donor lung assessment and transplant and lung airway management. He is one of the busiest lung transplant surgeons in the world – in fact, on July 7, 2019, he performed UW Medicine’s 1000th lung transplant. He has also led the development of the now highly-successful Adult ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) program at UWMC. He is the only surgeon in the Pacific Northwest who performs pulmonary endarterectomies. Additionally, he is a national expert in video-assisted thoracic surgery. Dr. Mulligan strives to do his best for every patient. He believes in treating patients like he would treat members of his own family.
The Mulligan Lab, an NIH-funded laboratory, has won numerous prestigious awards including the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation’s CAVES award and both the Western Thoracic Surgical Association’s Shumway and Samson awards. In addition to research, Dr. Mulligan is actively involved in resident education and has received the John K. Stevenson Award for excellence in resident education as well as the McGoon Award for outstanding teaching.
