About Giana H. Davidson
Giana Davidson, MD MPH, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon. She is a Professor of Surgery and Adjunct Professor in Health Systems and Population Health in the UW School of Public Health. She is the Section Head for Emergency General Surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center and Assistant Dean for Faculty Development in the Office of Faculty Affairs. Her research focuses on pragmatic clinical trials to better understand how we can improve patient-centered health outcomes especially for those who are at higher risk for worse outcomes in our healthcare system. Her goal at UW Medicine is to continuously improve the quality of care and ensure that success is evaluated in ways that include both the patients’ voices and equitable healthcare access and outcomes. Dr. Davidson is an expert in emergency general surgical care, surgical management of gastrointestinal disorders, and hernia repair. She commonly performs exploratory surgery for surgical emergencies, laparoscopic and open hernia repair, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and splenectomy. Her goal is to help guide patients and their families to make informed decisions that align with their healthcare goals and ensure our health system is delivering high quality surgical care. She is a mentor for faculty, residents and medical students and strives to teach compassionate clinical care, the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, and shared surgical decision making.
Dr. Davidson completed advanced training in research methodology. She has received funding from NIH, CMS, PCORI, AHRQ and directed several RCTs including the PCORI for appendicitis, Comparing Outcomes of Drugs and Appendectomy (CODA) trial and the Comparison of Surgery and Medicine on the Impact of Diverticulitis (COSMID) Trial. She is the PI of an AHRQ funded cluster, pragmatic, randomized trial focused testing interventions to improve care transitions from hospitals to skilled nursing facilities. She is a co-PI for a PCORI national implementation program focused on supporting decision making for appendicitis care (TRIAD). Dr. Davidson serves as a mentor to the NIDDK T32 research fellows.
Personal Interests
When not in the hospital, Dr. Davidson can often be found on the sidelines of her children’s’ sporting events, in her pottery studio, urban farm, or escaping to the surrounding PNW mountains, or Whidbey Island.
