About G. Burkhard Mackensen
G. Burkhard Mackensen, MD, PhD, FASE, is the Professor and Chair in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine and the Allan J. Treuer Endowed Professor of Anesthesiology. He also serves as the Director of Interventional Echocardiography at the UW Medicine Heart Institute, and is an adjunct professor of Cardiology and Medicine.
Dr. Mackensen is an internationally recognized expert in interventional and perioperative echocardiography, cardiothoracic anesthesiology, and critical care medicine.
Dr. Mackensen earned his MD from the University of Hamburg, Germany and his PhD from the Technical University in Munich, Germany. His clinical interests include cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesiology, critical care medicine, and transesophageal & interventional echocardiography. His research interests include clinical outcomes after cardiothoracic surgery, the utility of three-dimensional (3) echocardiography in guiding catheter-based interventions and the value of 3D printing of the heart and its components.
Personal Interests
Together with his family, Dr. Mackensen enjoys spending time in the outdoors of the Pacific Northwest. He particularly enjoys skiing, bicycling, hiking and sailing.
