Seattle Nursing Residency Program
Harborview Medical Center’s Nursing Residency Program supports and nurtures new residency graduates to be registered nurses at Harborview on various units throughout the hospital. The NRP prepares new graduates to successfully begin careers as confident nursing professionals as they transition from entry-level to competent professional registered nurses. You will develop critical thinking skills and learn how to bring evidence-based practice to the bedside. The goal of the NRP is to develop the clinical and leadership skills necessary to be a successful member of the healthcare team.
What will I learn during the UW Medicine nursing residency program?
This comprehensive year-long ANCC PTAP accredited program features monthly seminars to strengthen clinical skills and promote nursing professional development such as ethical decision-making, evidence-based practices, and stress management. Focused on our mission, residents explore the resources and patient-centered care we provide to the vulnerable populations we serve. You will be well supported as you transition from entry-level to a competent professional registered nurse. Orientation includes extensive clinical preceptorship as well as classroom training. Monthly seminars are conducted during the first year of employment. In addition, an advisory board composed of nursing leadership, human resources, unit managers, UW School of Nursing leaders, educators and facilitators meets to refine our curriculum and ensure resources to give our residents the best possible experience joining Harborview. Harborview is a Magnet-recognized hospital. It is the only Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma and burn center in Washington, Alaska, Idaho, or Montana.
Am I eligible to join the Nursing Residency Program?
You are eligible for the NRP if you meet the following criteria:
- Hold an associates, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in nursing science from an institution accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) within the last 12 months
- Passed NCLEX
- You have been a registered nurse for less than six months

Frequently asked questions
What are the deadlines for applying for the nursing residency program?
Harborview hires continually. Hiring dates determine which cohort you attend. There are three cohorts per year: Spring, Winter, and Fall.
How many hours per week do residents work?
Residents are hired at 90-100% FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) which is equal to 72-80 hours in a 2-week pay period. FTE may be decreased after 12 months by approval.
When do I attend NRP seminars?
The seminars are eight hours per month for a year as part of the transition to practice to give residents a solid foundation for becoming a professional registered nurse.
Am I obligated to stay at Harborview after the completion of my residency?
Yes. It is a required yearlong program. There is a hiring agreement that asks for a two-year commitment to your unit (the program is part of this time, not additional).
How long is the program?
Twelve months.
