Emergency, trauma and burn care at Harborview Medical Center
The Emergency & Trauma Center at Harborview Medical Center, located in First Hill near downtown Seattle, is staffed by board-certified emergency medicine physicians and highly trained emergency nurses who provide compassionate and expert adult and pediatric emergency care for all in need, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
As the only Level I adult and pediatric trauma and verified burn center in Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho, and the first certified comprehensive stroke center in Washington, Harborview’s Emergency Department is staffed and resourced to care for patients of all ages with all types of critical physical and mental illness, injury or crisis with ready access to a wide range of specialists.
Harborview’s Level I designation, issued by the Washington State Department of Health, recognizes that Harborview consistently meets stringent care standards and has the resources and expertise to care for seriously ill or injured patients, from resuscitation through rehabilitation.
As a Level I trauma center, Harborview also provides leadership in injury prevention programs, teaching, community outreach and education.
Driving Directions
Harborview Medical Center is at 325 Ninth Avenue, between Jefferson and Alder streets in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood. Other clinical sites adjacent to the main medical center are the Ninth and Jefferson Building and Norm Maleng Building. The Patricia Steel Building is three blocks east of the medical center. See map denoting building locations.
- Exit at James Street, Exit 164A. Turn right (east) and travel to Ninth Avenue.
- Turn right (south) on Ninth Avenue and go one block to Jefferson Street.
- Exit at James Street, Exit 165A. Turn left (east) on James and travel to Ninth Avenue.
- Turn right (south) on Ninth Avenue and go one block to Jefferson Street.
Drop-Off
To drop-off a patient at the ED, drive to the hospital ED Entrance at the corner of 9th Avenue and Jefferson Street
- Park in the Passenger Load zone on 9th Avenue (on either side of the street)
- Escort your party into the ED or go into the ED to request assistance
Park
Return to your car and park your car in the Ninth and Jefferson Building (NJB ) P2 Garage. The entrance into P2 is on Terry Avenue. Directions to P2:
- From the North on 9th Avenue
Travel one block south to Alder Street, turn left onto Alder Street
Travel one block east to Terry Avenue, turn left onto Terry Avenue
Travel 2.5 blocks to the P2 Garage entrance, turn left into the P2 garage and park
Take the elevator to the Main Lobby, Level L (note the level where you parked)
Exit the building and cross the street to the ED entrance
- From the South on 9th Avenue
Travel to the corner, turn right onto Jefferson Street
Travel one block east to Terry Avenue; turn left onto Terry Avenue
Travel .5 blocks to the P2 Garage entrance; turn left into the P2 garage and park
Take the elevator to the Main Lobby, Level L (note the level where you parked)
Exit the building and cross the streets to the ED entrance
Leave
When leaving the hospital to return to your car:
- Exit the Hospital and cross the streets to the Ninth and Jefferson Building (NJB)
- Enter the Lobby of NJB and turn left to go the bank of elevators
- You can pay for parking at the Parking Pay Station by the Lobby elevators or you can pay when you exit the garage in your car
- Take the elevator to the level on which you parked (A, B, C, or D)
- Exit the garage. Booth attendants are available most hours to answer questions.
By Bus
King County Metro Transit provides regular bus service to Harborview (325 Ninth Ave.) on several routes, including the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 60. Use Metro's Trip Planner to learn which buses you can take to the medical center and other sites on its campus, which include the Norm Maleng Building, Ninth and Jefferson Building and Patricia Steel Building.
- View Park Garage/P1 on Eighth Avenue between Alder and Jefferson streets.
- Ninth and Jefferson Building garage/P2 on Terry Avenue between Jefferson and James Streets. The garages are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Harborview Medical Center and the Patricia Steel Building offer ramps at their main entrances. The Norm Maleng and Ninth and Jefferson buildings enable easy access for all visitors. Security personnel also are available to help people enter and leave facilities.
